Pinewood Derby
Kiddo and Daddy made their first pinewood car to run in the scouts Pinewood Derby. They had lots of fun working on it. Unfortunately it didn't really run fast enough and he placed 13th out of 15 in his rank. He was a little disappointed and wanted to go home after his first race was over (there were 12 rounds). I felt bad for making him stay right til the end of his division's races, but we had to see it through.
Patiently waiting for our division.
Hamming it up for Mum's camera!
3rd place in this round!
His friend placed 3rd. Kiddo got a nice display shelf for his car.

Aww- it's a cute little car. 3rd place is okay- I know he wanted better... but he raced, and that is special. My girls once made their pinewood cars for a race (for Awanas)- the little cars were really artistic, but they new they wouldn't be fast enough so they chickened out and wouldn't race their cars.
Aww, brings back memories of my son's Pinewood Derby Days. : ) Hint on making it faster...put a little weight in the bottom of the car, but you have to make sure it doesn't make it over the weight limit. Son had a really fast car one year doing that, and won.

He did have a weight at the bottom, we think it was too far back though. I think the problem was the wheels weren't running smoothly enough.
Another "piece of advice". Too high a profile. Low, sleek, no driver, and use the weight in just the right place...make the car as light as possible to have enough wiggle room to adjust the weight. His is very cute tho and great experience.

Yep, I think the driver increased the drag on the car, but that's what he wanted! We have plenty ideas for next year. Thank you!!
@Gill_L - they give you a 'weight' in the kit, don't they? I can't remember, it's been so long ago! lol! If I remember correctly, D and son added a tad more, but made sure it still met weight requirements....and yes, it has to be placed correctly too. I was gonna say about the driver making it drag, but it was just too darn cute! I would have left him too! : p
I love the car they made! What fun though, sorry he didn't do better. Tell him maybe next year.

Do the Girl Scouts do anything like this? I was thinking of yuo guys since it is cookie time of year!
tough coming in at the end but great follow thru to stay and support... being a good loser is truly being a winner. -g
I don't think so but we are going to be at a wal mart selling cookies at the beginning of March. My sis bought a case of cookies ($48 worth) but didn't want the cookies, said to donate them somewhere (It's call the Gift of Caring). Miss A will earn a badge for doing that. When will you re-install yahoo, I really miss chatting with you my friend!!!

I was very proud that he could dry his tears and stay for the award ceremony. The true value in this was spending time with his Dad designing and making his car.

He was only 3rd in that race of 4 cars! Overall he was 13th out of 15.
Yay for placing! It's a very smart looking car even if she's not very fast!
Goodness the Kiddo and Little Lady are getting so big!
This was where my sons learned that some Dads help MUCHO!
Their Den Mother solved that problem by having the Dads make one too and letting them race their cars against each other. Worked very well as some of the Dads were so competetive.
